Twitter users across the globe have experienced problems with the social network, which was unavailable for between one to two hours.

As people tried to post tweets and/or catch up on the latest happenings via the web and across mobile devices, they were greeted with an error page.

"Something is technically wrong. Thanks for noticing - we're going to fix it up and have things back to normal soon."

Twitter, which has over 300 million active users, initially confirmed that the website was inaccessible through a tweet.

It later posted an update via its Tumblr account, which stated: “Some users are currently experiencing problems accessing Twitter. We are aware of the issue and are working towards a resolution.”

It is unclear what caused the social network to go offline, with the tech company yet to comment on the matter.
